Hugo Almeida![]() Hugo Almeida He is a Portuguese football player. He plays as a striker. Hugo Miguel Pereira de Almeida (born May 23, 1984 in Figueira da Foz) is a Portuguese football striker who currently plays for Werder Bremen in the German Bundesliga. Before that he played for FC Porto, União Leiria and Boavista. He is most known for a spectacular goal from a 35-metre free-kick in a 2006 Champions League game against Inter Milan at the San Siro. A powerful, surprisingly pacy forward, Hugo Almeida emerged from the shadows of FC Porto in 2006/07 with an impressive debut season at Bremen. Groomed at Porto's esteemed academy, Hugo Almeida endured a disjointed start to his career with loan spells at UD Leiria, Boavista FC and Bremen interspersed with periods on the fringes of the Porto first XI. Part of Portugal team that won the 2003 Toulon tournament, he appeared at the 2004 and 2006 European Under-21 Championship finals and made his senior bow in 2004 against England. In July 2006 Almeida decided he had had enough of waiting for his chance at Porto and agreed to move to Bundasliga side Werder Bremen on a season-long loan. An increasingly impressive first season saw him end the campaign with 9 goals, and the striker did enough to persuade the German club to invest four million euros to tie him down to a 4-year contract. He played at every level in international competitions, from the Under-15 to the main Portuguese national team. He made his debut for the national team in a friendly match against England on February, 2004.
