David Healy![]() ![]() David Healy He is a football player from Northern Ireland. He plays as a striker. David Jonathan Healy (born August 5, 1979 in Downpatrick) is a professional footballer who has scored a record 29 goals for Northern Ireland. He plays his club football for Fulham. Healy was raised in Killyleagh. He played for the local youth side and for Down Academy High School in Downpatrick before being signed by Manchester United in the late 1990s. Healy made three substitute appearances for the Manchester United first team before being loaned to Port Vale in 1999-00, appearing in 16 matches and scoring 3 goals. Healy joined Preston North End in 2000, the club where he would make a name for himself. In 2000-01, Healy scored 10 goals in 26 games and 10 more in 49 games in 2001-02. He got half that tally in 2002-03 in 28 games. Healy joined Norwich City on a month's loan on Thursday January 30, 2003 when Nigel Worthington signed him to halt the goal famine that had seen Norwich score just 6 times in their previous 9 league matches. He made his debut against Stoke City on February 1, 2003 and scored his first goal for Norwich the following week in the 2-2 draw at Sheffield Wednesday which made him an instant hit with the fans. However, in 2003-04, he returned to Preston and netted 15 times in 42 matches. Healy joined Leeds United on the October 29, 2004, already a fan favourite. He turned around several games with his substitute appearances, although he is wary of being tagged as a super sub. In his first season at Leeds, he was the club's top scorer with seven goals, and in the 2005-06 season, he finished with 12 goals in 25 appearances. He then scored Leeds United's opening goal of the 2006-07 Championship campaign from a penalty in a 1-0 victory over Norwich City on his 27th birthday. He was Leeds' top goalscorer this season with four Championship goals until Robbie Blake over took him on 25 November 2006. When Kevin Blackwell was sacked as Leeds manager, John Carver took over as caretaker manager and played David in his best position, as a striker, instead of Blackwell's right or left wing. Current manager Dennis Wise has used a rotation system with Leeds' strikers since the start of his reign preferring to play either Healy or Ian Moore with Richard Cresswell and Blake slotting in behind the pair. One of the major criticisms of David Healy's game is his inconsistency. While no one can question his talent, most fans would tell you he is Leeds' most talented player, at times unplayable. However, his inability to always produce his best form has forced manager Dennis Wise to leave him on the sidelines for much of the season, even prompting rumours of his departure with Premiership clubs such as Wigan, Charlton and Sheffield United. On 11 April 2007, Healy was made captain of Leeds for the rest of the 2006-07 season after a red-card to captain Jonathan Douglas meant he was ruled out for the rest of the season. Following the relegation of Leeds to League One, Healy voted against Bates regaining control of Leeds and was told he would never play for them again after turning down a wage referral. Healy reunited with ex Northern Ireland boss and current Fulham Boss; Lawrie Sanchez on the 13th July 2007 from cash strapped Leeds United for an undisclosed fee, reportedly around £1.5m He scored his first goal for Fulham in a Pre-Season friendly against South China in the Asia Trophy, with a low diving header. On 7 September 2005, Healy scored the winning goal against England at Windsor Park in a 1-0 victory to mark perhaps the biggest footballing result for Northern Ireland in the past twenty years, and their first win at home against England since 1927. Healy captained Northern Ireland on his 50th appearance, an away friendly against Finland on Wednesday 16 August 2006 in Helsinki in which he scored his 20th international goal. Northern Ireland won the game 2-1. On 6 September 2006, Healy became the first man since Colin Clarke to score a hat-trick for Northern Ireland and the first since George Best to achieve this feat in Belfast when they defeated Spain 3-2 in a historic victory for the side. Northern Ireland had previously not beaten Spain in 24 years, and never before in Belfast. Healy followed this feat with the winner against Latvia on 11 October He then became the first ever player to score two hat-tricks for Northern Ireland in the Euro 2008 Qualifiers taking place in March 2007 against Liechtenstein in an excellent 4-1 win. This took Northern Ireland's highest ever goalscorer's international tally to 27 goals. Against Sweden on 28 March 2007 he scored twice in a 2-1 win: a superb half-volley and a deft finish to win the game for his country and put them top of Euro 2008 qualifying Group F, taking his tally to 29 goals in 56 appearances. The two goals that he scored on Wednesday 28 March 2007 at Windsor Park made him the top scorer in the Euro 2008 Qualifiers ahead of Germany's Lukas Podolski.
